Thor 3 Will Shoot at Pinewood Atlanta Studios

    09 September 2015

This week in Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 3 news, the second draft of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 screenplay has been completed by writer-director James Gunn as the project gears up for a February start date at Pinewood Atlanta Studios. This new, fast-growing, Atlanta facility has become the new home for Marvel Studios who were the first company to use its stages when shooting Ant-Man there last year.

Marvel returned this summer with Captain America: Civil War and as we learned today, will continue using the Atlanta facilities after Guardians of the Galaxy 2 when it returns in late 2016 again to begin production on Thor: Ragnarok, a film that still needs a director.

The previous Thor solo adventure, The Dark World, shot at London’s Pinewood locations where Marvel’s Doctor Strange will shoot in a few weeks. The return stateside for the three-quel to where the original Thor shot is not entirely surprising given the closer proximity to Marvel Studios’ LA headquarters and the tax incentives of shooting in Atlanta. Not to mention, this new Pinewood lot is the newest and most advanced, and has the most space for large productions. It even has its own private Home Depot store on the lot!

Going forward, as Marvel Studios gears up production to handle three live-action feature films per year beginning next year, it’s likely that one or two of these will shoot in Atlanta every year going forward. The only slight twist to this particular news is that last week reports indicated that Disney was considering moving a pair of Marvel Studios productions out to Australia where they shot one of the movies "Pirates of the Caribbean". The variety of locations offered by Australia’s Village Roadshow Studios lend it to being a perfect location for large-scale superhero flicks, and Thor star Chris Hemsworth just so happens to live within driving distance. Despite the favorable current exchange rates to shooting down under, it’s not to be.

The other Marvel movie Yahoo7 previously reported might shoot in Australia is 2018’s Captain Marvel which is still possible although we wouldn’t be surprised to see it shoot in Pinewood as well, especially since this location will have already been used for Earthly military locations (Civil War), otherworldly locations (Guardians 2) and even mythical realms (Thor 3).

Earlier this summer, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige promised that there would be news by the end of summer regarding a director selection, new writers and even casting for Thor: Ragnarok, and since Feige’s now fully in charge after an executive shake-up last week, look out for more Thor news in the coming weeks.

Fantastic Four

    15 January 2015

Fox`s Fantastic four reboot is on our list of 2015 box office risks because it seems to be the one major superhero tentpole movie that has little fan love, and even less studio PR support behind it. With some eight months to go until release, we`ve seen zero footage from Chronicle director Josh Trank`s new take on Marvel`s first family; no promo images of the cast in costume, not even official concept art revealing what the finished product is supposed to be. In the meantime, no news has given rise to bad rumors about the state of production, or the studio`s opinion of the finished product.

Well, one person is stepping out in support of Fantastic Four, and it is none other than Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn, whose new movie Kingsman: The Secret Service hits theaters soon, and has already gotten good early reviews. According to Vaughn, if you liked Chronicle you`ll like the new Fantastic Four. But is Vaughn saying more than he meant to in that statement?

It`s not hard to see the correlation: Chronicle was about three teens discovering a power source that gave them superhuman abilities, and forced them to cope with that reality in the context of teen angst; Fantastic Four will basically tell that same tale. It`s actually a story closer to the Ultimate Fantastic Four comics of the 2000s, but it`s definitely in the same wheelhouse as Chronicle, but does that mean the format of Josh Trank`s storytelling will largely be the same?

We won`t know anything for sure until Fantastic Four releases some official marketing material, hopefully sometime before its August 7th release date.
